Tammy MasonThirty-year educator, Tammy Mason was named the first Superintendent of Arlington Community Schools by a unanimous vote of the Arlington School Board, December 23, 2013.

Under the leadership of Ms. Mason, Arlington Community Schools, in its inaugural year, was designated as an Exemplary School District by the Tennessee Department of Education, one of only 12 districts in the state to earn this distinction. Additionally, Donelson Elementary and Arlington Elementary were named Reward Schools, achieving academically in the top 5% in the state.

Representing Superintendents/Directors of Schools across the state, Ms. Mason was appointed in 2015 by Governor Bill Haslam to serve on the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission.

Prior to being named Superintendent, Ms. Mason served as principal of Arlington High School. While Principal of Arlington High School, the Tennessee School Board Association named Ms. Mason Principal of the Year. Exemplifying Ms. Mason’s strong belief that education must be a partnership between parents and the school/district staff, she was been honored in 2012 with Tennessee’s PTA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her career as an educator in Tennessee began in 1986, as a teacher at Dogwood Elementary. Ms. Mason moved to Houston Middle School in Germantown Tennessee in 1993. After teaching for nine years, she entered school administration as an Assistant Principal at Houston Middle and was later named Principal of Houston Middle School. In 2011 she was named as Shelby County Schools’ first Middle School Director.

Originally from West Lafayette Indiana, she relocated to Shelby County in 1986 after receiving her BSE degree from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer Indiana and in 1993 earned her Master’s Degree (MSE) in Education and Administration Supervision from the University of Memphis.
