Congratulations to Kim Douglas, the 2024-2025 ACS Supervisor of the Year! As the secondary supervisor for high school academics, Douglas has earned this recognition for her visionary leadership and dedication to advancing academics and career-focused programming at Arlington High.

“Mrs. Douglas’ work exemplifies what it means to be a leader and innovator,” said Superintendent Dr. Allison Clark. “It’s my aim as superintendent to maximize every single program we have throughout ACS to make sure they’re evolving with the needs of students. Mrs. Douglas, without ever being asked, is always of that mindset; she consistently assesses the effectiveness of the programs she helps oversee and works closely with teachers to give them the resources they need for the programs to thrive. Mrs. Douglas truly cares about our students, teachers and the mission of our district in developing the Portrait of an ACS Graduate!”

A vision for growth and opportunity

With a hands-on approach to leadership, you can often find Douglas in the high school working closely with teachers and administrators. Her oversight of Career & Technical Education (CTE), including managing federal funding, ensures these programs thrive and are well-resourced. Whether it’s funding innovative classroom equipment or advocating for hands-on experiences beyond the walls of Arlington High, Douglas stays connected to the needs of students and teachers by capturing a first-hand perspective.

One of her most significant achievements has been redefining and promoting career pathways and early postsecondary opportunities (EPSOs) at AHS. She leads with intentionality, always considering the ‘why’ behind the programs we offer. Her efforts help students graduate-ready for their next step – whether it’s college, a career, service or industry certification. She’s also known to dive into the details of classroom planning, like curriculum reviews, data digs, modeling lessons, helping plan lessons and even co-teaching.

Ashley Williams, an ELA teacher at AHS, noted Douglas’ knack for creating a supportive environment.

“After being out of the classroom for several years, I felt a bit like a fish out of water – more flopping around than swimming gracefully,” Williams said. “Luckily, Kim jumped in like a life raft, providing essential planning support, individual coaching and even keeping me afloat during our PLC meetings. It was clear from our first conversation that she is not only knowledgeable but also a master at her craft. Her support has been invaluable in helping me regain my footing, and I’m truly grateful for her guidance.”

Real-world success through innovative experiences

Douglas’ leadership extends beyond the classroom and into the summer months. Just off its second year, she launched the AHS Machining Summer Camp in partnership with Southwest Tennessee Community College and local industry leaders from Stryker. The camp gives students practical learning in machining and manufacturing, exposing them to high-demand career opportunities and skills needed to succeed.

She was also instrumental in helping ACS secure a $1 million Innovative High School Models grant from the state, designed to reimagine traditional school environments by expanding access to career-focused instruction and industry credentials, college credit opportunities, mentorships and job shadowing placements.

“One thing I admire about Kim the most is how approachable and understanding she is in all situations,” said Kaitlyn Scherffius, the clinical internship instructor at AHS. “She is a trusted mentor whose insights always lead us in the right direction as a department and individually. She shows genuine care for the well-being of our team, our students and the school as a whole. I know that we as a department can always count on Kim to lead us, mentor us and be there for us no matter what.”

Douglas will now represent Arlington Community Schools at the regional Supervisor of the Year competition. Her leadership continues to inspire, and we’re excited to see her represent ACS on this next level. Thank you, Mrs. Douglas, for your unwavering dedication to our students and staff!
